What are stretch marks?

Stretch marks are actually linear scars, which affect a thin layer of the skin and are the consequence of a rapid stretching of the skin and a deficiency of the collagen in the dermis of the skin. This is associated with, and occurs during pregnancy. It is also associated with obesity, because of weight gain over time, puberty growth spurts or any other fast weight gain that can happen with men weightlifters and body builders. Skin does not bounce back if it’s been stretched by rapid growth and lack of collagen. Instead, it becomes decorated by a form of scarring called stretch marks, or striae

When stretch marks first appear they are purple or reddish lines. However they fade with age and eventually turn silver in color. The areas of the skin affected look empty and are soft to touch.

When searching for stretch marks treatment to heal stretch marks, it’s important to know that the layer of skin that needs to be treated actually has three layers. The three layers are the epidermis, the top layer, the dermis or middle layer and the subcutaneous stratum, which is the inner layer. The dermis is responsible for helping skin keep its shape. When the skin is stretched over a period of time, it becomes less elastic, so that the dermis loses its support because of the lack of collagen in that area causing dermal and epidermal tearing with subsequent thinning of both layers, what we call stretch marks. Stem cells can be used to treat all three layers, especially the areas of collagen deprivation in the dermis.

Stretch marks usually appear in the areas of the body where the highest amounts of fat are stored. The most common areas are the stomach, upper arms, breasts, underarms, hips, buttocks and the inner and outer thighs. Many ladies have an abundance of stretch marks in the stomach area .

Scarring

A scar is a result of the body’s repair after injury on the skin or other organs. Stretch marks, in contrast, are a thinning of the skin from stretching where there is little collagen and elastin but mostly epidermis and some papillary dermis, i.e. the support of the skin is lost. Skin scars occur when the dermis (the deep, thick layer of skin) is damaged. Most skin scars are flat and leave a trace of the original injury that caused them.

Acne scars include “ice pick scars that are deep, narrow scars which form pits in the skin. They are among the most common. Rolling scars create a wave-like appearance on the skin’s surface due to their wide and shallow depth. Boxcar Scars have angular, well-defined edges usually on the temples or cheeks. Their appearance is similar to chickenpox scars.

Hypertrophic scars are raised scars which stay within the boundary of the original wound can reduce in size with the passage of time. Keloid scars, on the other hand, are overgrowths of tissue which expand beyond the original wound site. The scar is rubbery and firm and may itch. Often they form to be much larger than the original wound.

How are Acne Scars different then other scars?

Acne scars are bound down and depressed. As with other scars, acne scars are the result of a wound in our skin healing, resulting in too much Collagen III in that particular spot. Acne scars are very similar to incision or injury scars as both originate in the dermis and hypodermis (fat layer) but the acne scars have isolated pockets of scaring where the skin in attached to the deep dermis called “ice pick scars”. All scars that a lot of time to resolve with the various treatments offered at Austin Aesthetics.

Modern stem cell therapy, often combined with gels using collagen technology, light treatment and Microdermabrasion, can be highly effective for treating and removing all scars. They can be very effective at improving the look and texture of scarring even if the scarring is not totally removed. Stem cell therapy helps by causing regeneration in the skin which is the key to treating scars and stretch marks.
